I wanted to share my first concert experience. I grew up around music, watching my dad’s band, so I remember them playing from a very early age for all kinds of events. They toured regionally around the Ozarks, but the first national act with full production that I saw was the country band Alabama. My mother took me. I must've been maybe 8 years old. She was trying to surprise me, but I had brought along nothing but Alabama music to listen to on the drive. After annoying her with it the whole ride, she finally broke down and told me where we were going. We had great seats, and I remember the energy. I wanted to stay in our seats until everyone was gone, hoping to meet the band. Some of the crew came out to talk to us, and looking back, I realize now they were hitting on my mom and aunt—and that’s when I witnessed “tour life” for the first time.

The first show I remember attending was when I was about 8 years old. My brother and I used to watch The Monkees TV show after school every day. Our cousins watched it too, and we’d pretend to be the characters—I was always Davy Jones. We listened to multiple cassette tapes of the band, and I knew every lyric through and through.
The Monkees were coming to the Coliseum in Phoenix, AZ, and we begged my mom to take us. The opening act was Weird Al Yankovic, which was a great surprise. I remember the first song he played was “Like a Surgeon.” He came out in full medical gear, pushing a patient who, by the end of the song, got up and danced around the stage. It was hilarious!
Then The Monkees came on, and it was just awesome. I remember seeing Peter Tork come out with a red Stratocaster, and I think that’s the moment I decided I wanted to play music. I made my mom take me around the arena to the merch booths, hoping I could buy that Strat... but no luck! That show definitely had an impact on my musical life. I wish I could go back and watch it again!
