Something You Whisper – PRESHOW RITUALS

In this Preshow Rituals segment, Wes Will, of the post-hardcore band, Something You Whisper, talks about what they do before every show. You can check out their rituals, after the break.

As a band, we don’t have a ton of pre-show rituals. We like to do a lot of exercises. Before every show, most of us do about 45 mins of working out. We do a good mixture of cardio, push-ups, jumping jacks, and resistance band workouts before each show. We do this before, and sometimes… depending on how much time we have, during our vocal warm ups. We all like to do a LOT of neck stretching. We do everything we can to prevent waking up with a bangover. We take pre-show warm-ups pretty seriously. I think physical fitness is definitely a major thing a lot of bands look past when trying to become better live.

As a vocalist, my personal pre-show ritual consists of drinking about 45 liters of water starting from when we get to the venue, and until before we go on stage. Being super hydrated is key. I also chew on ginger once in a while ifI’m feeling a little stuffed up or whatever. Whether it’s from being in the cold or just not getting enough sleep, ginger is my savior on the road. Besides getting overly sweaty before we even get on stage….we talk to everyone in the venue before the show, or before we play. We like to make new friends, or at least attempt to get people to watch our set. When we are in new cities every night, it’s sometimes hard to get the room stoked for your set, when it’s your first time playing in that city, ever, and no one knows who you are. So that’s about it for pre-show rituals…. Getting sweaty with warm-ups, and making friends with everyone we walk past.
