Preshow rituals are a funny old thing. I know a bunch of people who have super intricate routines or WILD rituals that just don’t make sense to me, but then the whole point is that it’s something that puts YOU in the best position before your show, so really who cares what you’re doing in that (often terrifying) window of time before hitting the stage.
I used to be terrible with warm-ups or anything of the kind. I never warmed up before shows and I never got in the right headspace. Mainly because I didn’t really know what warming up properly was, but also because I always thought it was fine not too. Now though, I’m warming up my voice before every show and making sure I’m not really talking much half an hour beforehand. My voice is my main instrument and I really push it in my set, so making sure it is happy is at the forefront for me!
The other main thing? No alcohol or substantial food. Definitely don’t want to be burpy on stage (and trust me it has happened before. No fun at all). I find even the smallest bit of alcohol an hour before a set can make me bloated and burpy and the thought of singing like that scares me to my very core haha. Just a whole bunch of water for me (room temperature of course). Plus no alcohol before makes it even better when you step off that stage to a case of beers in the dressing room.
The final thing is I always make sure I’ve emptied my bladder. You don’t want to be needing a wee on stage, it’s no fun at all. I hope that has been insightful in some way!
