Tip #1 – Make friends with the other acts!
This one may seem pretty obvious, but it’s crucial to become friends with the other acts on the tour. Make an effort to say hey or watch their set. Compliment them. Be kind! By the end of the tour, you’ll have an entire hoard of new best friends and it’s pretty awesome to share such an amazing experience as a nation-wide tour with someone.
Tip #2 – Always respect the headliner!
Try not to make yourself visible during their set. Don’t hang around to sign when they’re up there doing their thing, it’s just kinda messed up and distracts from what is essentially their show. And always make sure they know how grateful you are to be on the tour with them. Make an effort to watch their set too! You can always learn something from someone more senior than you as well as enjoy some good music.
Tip #3 – Have info cards done for your fans!
I typically carry around no less than 5000 4×6 info cards when I’m on tour. These include my picture, a brief bio, and links to all my social media. It’s something very easy for fans to stick in their pockets and remember to read once they get home.
Tip #4 – Toss shirts in the crowd during your set!
Nothing gets fans pumped up like free stuff. You really wanna get them going? Toss one out every song if you can. It keeps them engaged and excited. Plus, if their friend catches a shirt, chances are they’ll want one too!
Tip #5 – Start off with a cover song if you’re a newer band!
Play a song that everyone knows and loves. It’ll warm new potential fans up to the idea of you as an artist and get everyone singing along. Personally, I start with “I Love Rock And Roll”. It’s a classic and really gets the kids I sing for going!
