Hatebreed’s 10 Years of Perseverance Tour – TOUR REVIEW

The legendary band, Hatebreed, rolled through the loop of Chicago at the House of Blues on their “10 Years of Perseverance Tour” with tourmates: Whitechapel, All Shall Perish and Deez Nutes. Check out our review of the night’s events after the break.

To kick this off, nostalgia tours are a mixed bag for me. It makes me wonder if bands do them to really celebrate something, or are they going through the motions trying to be relevant again and bring back fans that may have been lost at one point in time. Happily, it was the former with Hatebreed! Before I get into detail about them, let me share with you some insight into their hand-openers! Now let’s get this started!

Due to last minute inconveniences, I arrived around the last song for Deez Nuts. I couldn’t really give you the details on them since I pretty much missed their entire set. Hopefully next time they play the States.
Coming from the Bay Area of California, All Shall Perish wasted no time getting things rowdy. Vocalist Hernan Hermida looked like a bearded Wolverine from the X-Men comic book on stage. Big, fierce looking, and ready for the kill along with his band mates. “I HOPE TO SEE YOU FUCKING DIEEEEEE” Herman shrieks through the mike kicking off into 2011’s “My Retaliation” as the crowd shot off into a mosh-aholic frenzy. Breakdowns, solos, flying bodies and windmills sum up their carnival ride of brutal metal crammed in a half hour. This man was definitely happy with what he just heard! Check out their newest release “This Is Where It Ends” and get groovy!

Knoxville, Tennessee’s own Whitechapel delivered a 3 guitar assault that could’ve shaken the HOB building itself. Nasty it was, but in a good way! Vocalist Phil Bozeman may be one slim dude, but man does he pack a wallop with his deeply guttural voice! The 6 piece sextet was definitely adamant they had a new record out considering they played more than half of it in their set. If deathcore has a band that is here to stay, and looks to seek longevity in their career, it’s these young fellas. Every release and every show they are honing their craft and making their peer’s look like the amateur’s that can’t keep up! This is also coming from a guy who used to not be a fan of them. The title track off 2008’s “This Is Exile” definitely had the audience’s full participation during the chorus. Even those not familiar were catching on as well. Now that is what I call, converting!

Finally, the sacred moment of the night had come. The legendary Hatebreed was up. Opening song “Proven” got circle pits forming faster than you could say the band’s name. Vocalist Jamey Jasta even got overpowered by the crowd during certain songs like “I Will Be Heard” and “A Call For Blood”. The diehards were out in full effect and made it a mission to have their voices heard. Literally. Before you knew it, Hatebreed had blasted through their now 10 year old album “Perseverance” front to back in 40 minutes. Even though it felt shorter! 2003 smasher “Live For This” was a defining moment of exactly what the band and the fans do: and that’s living for moments like this. The old schooler’s were happy to get their dose as well with the 1997 classic “Last Breath” even though the crowd no signs of losing any. Something unheard of for most band’s fan bases almost an hour into their set. Closing off the show with the appropriately titled anthem “Destroy Everything” the crowd did exactly that. Jamey and co blasted through this set punk rock style: fast short songs non-stop and then you realize it was over and it felt like they had only gotten started. Jasta announced at the end that they will be back next year and with a brand new album! So take notice!

As I mentioned in my 1st paragraph earlier, Hatebreed pulled off a nostalgia tour solidly. If you’re a fan and Perseverance is your favorite album, then what are you waiting for?! GET A TICKET NOW and attend this one time tour! The only chance you’ll ever get of seeing this band perform this classic album in its entirety. In the words of Arnold Schwarzenegger, “Do it, do it now!”
