In this Tour Tips segment, the singer-songwriter, Lilla Vargen, recommends advice for being a musician on the road. You can check out the tips, after the break.
1. Make time for yourself.
It’s so important to zone out and listen to music you like, or get a bath (if where you’re staying has one!) and just relax. Touring can be hard on mental health and I found it really helpful to do a few simple things a day that I really like.
2. Always check the venue for a washing machine!
When you’re living out of a suitcase, you manage to go through clothes much quicker than you think. I always made sure to wash and dry my clothes when the venue had a washing machine as it made life so much easier and none of us wanted our van to smell weird!
3. Make time for pre-show rituals.
I absolutely love touring and playing shows with my band. We’ve known each other for a long time and always make time to play games before a show. And we have our own secret handshake we do before every show as well (can’t wait to be allowed to shake hands again!). I think this is something that gets us ready to go on stage and it’s nice to have a routine in all the madness.
4. Eat well and bring multivitamins.
I think it’s so easy to get caught in the trap of eating junk food while sitting in a van for hours, but I found that trying to eat well really helps me and I always buy loads of vitamins so I can re-charge if I’m feeling run down. It’s a simple but really important thing to do.
5. Enjoy it!
The show itself is usually only an hour out of what is already a hectic day. So it’s easy to take it for granted. Sometimes before I’d start singing I would take a moment to just look at the crowd and appreciate the fact that I get to do what I love tonight again, with my friends. Touring really is such an incredible experience and I cannot wait to get out there again soon!
