The Relative Minimum - CRAZY TOUR STORIES
Join us as The Relative Minimum tells you one of their stories from touring.
In this Crazy Tour Stories segment, the metal band, The Relative Minimum, shares a wild moment from their very first tour back in 2018. You can check out the story below:
Somehow, we kicked off The Relative Minimum’s very first tour back in 2018 with one of our most memorable travel moments. We had just played our first show of the run and were heading to my parents’ place as a midway point to sleep. It was really late, I was the only person awake, and we had to rush since our friends in The Silvertongues were also going to stay there with us. The van’s gas light came on about twenty minutes from our destination, but I figured we would be fine to make it at least to the gas station that I knew was close by. I think you can see where this is going.
What I didn’t factor in was the fact that we were towing a trailer and gas was going waaay faster than I was used to. I ran out of gas literally right as I was pulling up to our exit, just thinking “no fucking way.” I had just enough to coast through the off ramp and then ran out right as I turned the corner. I woke the guys up and took the gas can for a stroll to save the night from my dumb mistake. I walked up the street thinking “why is it so dark right now?”, only to find that the gas station I knew of was permanently closed. Freaked out, I looked up the next closest station and then felt stupid because there was one just a few blocks down, it was a longer walk, but not too bad. By the time I got back, the rest of the band was semi awake and waiting. I got the tank topped off and went to turn on the van, but it didn’t start. Now I was just confused.
I was gone for maybe thirty minutes on that walk for gas. But every light in the van was on and it dawned on me… the boys killed the battery. In disbelief I said “what the fuck guys!”, but they were laughing so it stayed light despite the situation. Delirious and out of options, I called my dad. He miraculously picked up the phone at 3 AM and said he would come give us a jump. By the time we got to my parents’, the guys in TST were passed out in their car. We scared the shit out of them by tapping on the glass and shining flashlights to get them up.
We all still reminisce and laugh about it today. Funnily enough, our current guitarist wasn’t in the band at the time, but he was one of the guys who was passed out in the car waiting for our arrival. One thing he always likes to recall is sleeping on some cots from my mom’s home daycare. He was so exhausted he felt like a child laying down for nap time. It was a wild event that connected us, and thankfully the rest of the travels went smoothly (for the most part). We quickly learned you can never expect everything to go right on tour and that still remains true to this day. But damn, does it make for great memories.
