My dream tour would be a supporting act on a tour co-headlined by Nirvana and Incubus. I’d open the night with Jungle or The Talking Heads. Even though it doesn’t show in my writing style or lyrics, these bands have inspired and shaped my artistry in ways no others have. I’ve watched as many interviews as I can find about the way they approach songwriting and tried to implement some of their techniques into my own process. Even though these bands and their audiences might not juxtapose, I’ve learned that many artists enjoy and extract from creatives outside of their own bubble.

“Next To You” is a blend of genres and cultures. The obvious Daft Punk French House style mixed with Disco and Electro Pop. When I wrote this song originally, I sat on it for about a year. I had just gotten into songwriting and hadn’t networked enough to get artists comfortable or confident enough to collaborate with me. Thankfully, I was able to connect with multiple artists to make this song happen: Gopent, who is a producer out of Barcelona and specializes in 70s/80s Disco and Pop, Alyssa Jane, an intoxicatingly talented singer/songwriter out of Phoenix, and Afro Beats artist Annie Daymar out of Jos, Nigeria.

A specific joy I get from songwriting is the freedom of movement. I never have to lock in on a certain sound or be pigeonholed into working with specific types of artists. This prevents me from burning out creatively and allows me to grow and draw inspiration across the musical spectrum.

The music I listen to today is a revolving door. I enjoy listening to early 90s grunge and alternative, Fall Out Boy, Jungle, Loaded Honey, Danica Bryant, Dory Loup, and so on. It honestly just depends on the mood. To have been able to watch these legends perform and learn from them would have been incredible. I guess there is still a chance with Jungle, no? Haha, gotta set the sights high!
