A little over a year ago, my band and I had the chance to open for a German band called Provinz, joining them on tour all across Germany. Since we were on a tight budget, our tour manager booked us Airbnbs in every city we stopped in, trying to spend roughly the same amount each night. That’s when we learned something crucial about traveling, money stretches very differently depending on where you are.

Out in the countryside, in the middle of nowhere, we’d pull up to these surprisingly beautiful, cozy Airbnbs, big rooms, quiet views, maybe even a friendly cat or two waiting at the door. But the moment we hit a big city, spending that same amount got us… well, let’s just say, a different kind of experience.

One night we stayed in a guy’s apartment who collected the weirdest art, every corner had some funky animal sculpture staring back at you. Another night, the walls were completely covered in pen drawings, floor to ceiling, like someone had their kids turn the whole place into a giant sketchbook. And there was that unforgettable night when we had to crash on a couch next to the smoking area, we basically slept in a cloud of nicotine.

By the end of the week, we’d figured it out, if you’re staying in the countryside, your budget goes far. But in the city? You’d better add a few zeros if you want to sleep somewhere that doesn’t smell like cigarettes and existential dread.
