In this Preshow Rituals segment, the alternative pop artist, Shockley, reveals what he does before taking the stage. You can check out the rituals below:
I have a lot of friends who have this ability to do whatever they please throughout the day, roll in to sound check, eat a burger in the green room, and then put on a hell of a show. I am not that man haha… My manager gives me a hard time because he can’t tell if I’m about to play a show or take the floor in the NBA Finals. My obsession with sports coupled with my weird superstitions lends to a fairly interesting show day.
If I don’t workout and get my heart rate up quite a bit on a show day, my head is never going to be in the right place. I have to go to the gym or do a workout of some sorts. I eat a fairly balanced diet throughout the day, but I will rarely eat dinner, I can’t have a lot on my stomach when I perform. I like to check in on my band throughout the day and make sure everyone is feeling confident and comfortable, but I must admit I don’t want to hang out. I love to be alone with myself to visualize and honestly just remind myself how grateful I am to get to do what I’m about to do.
Soundcheck is a standard soundcheck, and once we’re all feeling good and comfortable I prefer to retreat away again and get by myself. I have a vocal steamer that is my actual best friend, and I throw my headphones on and listen to classical music while watching Kobe Bryant highlights haha. The classical music keeps me calm, Kobe Bryant is the most inspiring person to me, it’s the best combo of all time. Basketball has always been that thing for me that centers me and keeps me going, and watching one of the GOATS do what he did on the court reminds me how hard I’ve worked and how blessed I am. Then right before the show I do a huddle with the band, take a single shot of tequila, we pray and then do our thing.
