In this Preshow Rituals segment, the singer-songwriter, Michelle Ray, reveals what she does before taking the stage. You can check out the rituals, after the break.
I always get nervous before I perform, even though I’ve been performing for 20 years! Each show is important to me, so I have my routine I do before every single one. Before each show, I like to mentally / physically get in a good place.
First, I go through my affirmation playlist I have on Spotify and meditate on that for about 10 minutes. While doing so I do some stretches and neck massages to open the vocals up. Next, I play some empowering women songs, such as “Hustler” by Beyoncé of course, OR dance around to Broadway albums like Dear Evan Hansen. Depends on the mood and the day! I’ve learned that nervous energy and excited energy are so similar, they can be mistaken for the same thing. I channel the nerves into excitement instead.
To finish off the process, I make the “Michelle Ray Singer’s Cocktail.” A specialty I’ve grown accustomed to, I am for sure a creature of habit. I take a shot and a half of whiskey, two tablespoons of honey, half a lemon, hot water, peppermint tea, and a menthol lozenge. Voilà!
