In this Preshow Rituals segment, the alternative pop artist, Juliana Madrid, reveals what she does before taking the stage. You can check out the rituals below:

Preparing for stage starts usually the minute I wake up, which is typically with horrible nerves. I stress about everything that could go wrong and I actively work on these things throughout the day. I take a zinc pill, drink tea, lots of water, and make sure I eat before the anxiety ruins my appetite.

Before soundcheck, I’ll find the most secluded spot near or in the venue to do some vocal warmups and sometimes just scream a little.

After soundcheck I usually have an hour or two before I play. This is my favorite time, where I do my makeup and listen to music I like to sing to.

Around 30 minutes before I take stage is when I do my best attempt to remind myself to be in the moment and out of my head. Literally the only thing that helps me do that is walking and like maybe one shot of tequila.

Five minutes before stage, typically all thoughts fly out the imaginary window installed onto the side of my brain. I simultaneously get the urge to barf and ~other things. I sometimes forget how to breathe. But the second I’m on stage, it’s like real life all of a sudden. Everything feels so clear and exciting rather than anxiety inducing. Playing shows is my favorite thing and all I want to do for the rest of my life.
