I’m not 100% clear if this was my exact first concert, but I’m pretty sure it was the one that changed my life.
In 2004 I went to Rod Laver arena with my Dad and watched John Mayer.
Funny story though, we couldn’t find where to park and ended up parking in some obscure area. Trying to find the arena, we walked through hallways and reception areas, clearly in the wrong place. Out of all the confusion about where we were, I could hear some familiar music. It sounded like Mayers tunes and so I headed towards it. Dad was on the phone so he just followed me. Long story short we turned a corner and found ourselves in the actual arena. This was a couple of hours before showtime. Lo and behold out pops John Mayer and starts to soundcheck. We sat down, watched the soundcheck and then eventually bumped into security who had no idea how we managed to find ourselves inside.
Say what you will about Mayer, he knows how to write a great song and he’s an incredible musician. He makes the music that he wants to make and doesn’t conform too much to what people expect of him which I admire. Ever since that night I have always wanted to be a songwriter and every time I go see him, I get that same feeling I did when I saw him the first time.
