I happen to have a lot of random crazy concert stories from when I was younger. Some of the top kickers were when 3rd Eye Blind pulled me out of the crowd to hang backstage and watch the Goo Goo Dolls play from side stage. Another time Jared Leto jumped on my back at Coachella. That was, let’s say, bizarre.
But for my first concert ever, I went to see The Wallflowers. I was with my mom at a big venue right outside of LA. The crowd was huge, everyone buzzing with excitement. I remember being mesmerized. Stunned. I sang out every word off of their album “Bringing Down the Horse”.
In those days, I would lay on the carpet at home and play their CD on repeat. I’d read the lyrics from the CD sleeve for every track and just get lost in their throwback/ roots/ rock sound. To be able to go see them live for my first ever real concert experience was beyond a dream.
Cut to a few years ago, I was at the Santa Monica Pier for an outdoor concert series and the guitar player from The Wallflowers was in one of the bands. When the concert was over, I noticed him driving away in his car. When he stopped at a light, I ran over and said “you’ve only got one headlight on! One Headlight!” He laughed, I laughed, it was cheesy, it was awesome.
