Broadway Calls - FIRST CONCERT EVER

In this First Concert Ever segment, Ty Vaughn, guitarist/vocalist of the punk rock/pop punk band, Broadway Calls, talks about the story of his first experience with live music. You can check out the story below:

Let me tell ya about the first concert I ever attended.  I was born in 1982.  My parents are rockers.  Have you ever seen “Dazed and Confused”?  That’s their class.  Class of 1977 in a small farm town an hour south of Portland.

So naturally we always had rock music blasting through the house: ZZ Top, Aerosmith, AC/DC, etc.  When I was 6 years old my folks decided it was time for their three kids to experience a rock concert.  We went to the Portland Memorial Coliseum to see Eric Clapton and Mark Knopfler.  If you think you’re not familiar with these guitar legends, you are.  You’ve heard their riffs.  Clapton was in Cream and The Byrds.  Knopfler is the singer and guitarist from Dire Straits.  I wouldn’t be a guitar player today if the riff from “Money For Nothing” hadn’t made its way to my ears as a youth.  It’s the riff that made me want to learn how to play.

I don’t remember much from the concert itself, but I remember it was the loudest thing I’d ever experienced.  I remember it was exciting.  A strange lady grabbed my leg and scared me when I was kicking the back of her seat.  That’s when I learned not to do that.  I remember that it was cool to see these guys who looked so small on stage (massive room) playing their guitars and hearing the songs I’d heard a hundred times in my family living room.  I could feel the songs this time.  I remember my mom explaining to me what bass was.

I remember we left before the encore because my parents had 3 little kids with them.  They were younger than I am now by a decade.  When we were walking to the car we could hear the riff for “Money for Nothing” kind of echoing in the parking lot.  Forever grateful to be raised by rockers.
