Rubikon – CRAZY TOUR STORIES

This crazy story from the road was written by the rock band, Rubikon. You can check out their story, after the break.

We were touring in an RV with a gear trailer behind it, and just arriving in Akron Ohio for a show. Four smelly men and a dog named Foo, marinating inside the RV on a warm day, together, a rather unpleasant scent, truth be told. Jae was driving for this last leg of our day’s journey, and as he took a right turn at an Akron street corner he cut it a little tight and suddenly we hear a grinding sound. Anytime you hear a grinding sound when you’re driving an RV, you perk your ears up and wonder how bad the damage is.

Turns out we got hung up on a pole-mounted streetlight. And not really on the pole, either, but on a dinky little sun shield that wraps around the top of the stoplight. This is not a big deal, we think, just a little snag. This happens to occur right in front of a fancy wine bar. So we clamber up the pole, trying to free the RV using the few tools at our disposal – ahem, a Leatherman? That’s the ONLY tool you brought along on a tour, guys? Really? Anyways, the Leatherman doesn’t get it done. A policeman moseys on up (you can mosey in Ohio, it’s legal) and asks us what we’re doing. At this point, a small crowd of well-dressed onlookers forms inside the wine bar. We explain our situation and the officer decides to provide us some assistance.

But oh no we still can’t shake free. We try backing up, no dice. We try having a bunch of us push the side of the RV away from the streetlight – to no avail. The crowd continues to grow during our escapades. The grinding sound of metal on metal gets louder. We zag, we zig, we zag AND we zig. Nothing. Finally, we push the RV sideways while simultaneously maneuvering it from the comfort of the captain’s chair, and voila – we break free.

The crowd erupts in cheers from inside the wine bar. So we do what any self-respecting, hard-working rock-and-roll band would do – we park the RV in front of that wine bar, walk inside to more cheers, and enjoy a few glasses of well-earned Pinot Noir on the house. And, of course, we hand out show flyers to our new friends, who politely never mention that funny smell that seemed to arrive with us.
